Makeup does most of the work

The Joker is one of the few characters where the face is more identifying than the outfit. A purple suit alone is a purple suit; with the white base, dark eyes and red mouth it is unmistakable.

Face paint also has a practical advantage over a mask here — it moves with the wearer's expression, which suits a character built entirely around one, and it stays comfortable across a whole evening.

Choosing a version

The classic comic Joker is a clean purple suit with green hair and a wide grin. The animated version simplifies it. The modern film interpretations are messier and more textured, with smeared makeup and worn clothing.

They are recognisably the same character but tonally very different, which is worth considering depending on the event.

Suitability by age

Joker costumes span a wide range from cartoonish to genuinely unsettling. For a children's party or a mixed-age trick-or-treating group, the animated and classic comic versions travel far better than the horror-leaning ones.

The hair

Green hair is non-negotiable for this character. A wig is easier and more reliable than temporary colour, and it comes off at the end of the night rather than lingering for a week.

The Joker pairs obviously with Harley and sits within any Batman group as the villain side of the theme.
