The four things worth having

Most sand play comes back to four actions: scooping, pouring, moulding and sifting. A bucket, a spade, a mould and a sieve cover all four, and almost everything else is a variation.

Beyond those, water wheels and channel sets add cause and effect — pour here, something happens there — which is where children start experimenting rather than just repeating.

What lasts

Thin moulded plastic cracks in the cold and goes brittle in the sun, and buckets usually fail at the handle join first. Thicker-walled toys with a moulded rather than riveted handle survive considerably longer, which matters for things that live outdoors all year.

Wooden and metal sets look lovely and are worth it for the beach, though they need bringing inside rather than being left in a damp sandpit.

Matching toys to age

Under two, bigger is better — chunky scoops and a low-sided tray. Fine detail is wasted and small pieces get lost.

From three, moulds and shape sets start to matter because children want to make something recognisable. From five, the interest shifts to construction: channels, dams, tunnels and anything that moves water from one place to another.

Keeping a set together

A mesh bag is the difference between a set that lasts a season and one that lasts years. It drains, it dries, and it means the sieve does not end up in the garden bed.
