Packing for the beach

The practical constraint at the beach is not what your children want to play with, it is what you are willing to carry across soft sand. Nesting buckets, stacking moulds and anything that packs inside something else earns its place.

A mesh bag is worth more than any individual toy in it. Sand falls straight through, everything dries on the drive home, and you are not shaking out a canvas bag in the driveway.

What holds up in salt and sun

Salt water and UV are harder on beach toys than a sandpit ever is. Thicker moulded plastic and stainless fittings last; thin plastic and painted metal do not survive many seasons.

Rinsing everything in fresh water before it goes back in the car adds years, and takes about a minute at the beach shower.

Beyond buckets and spades

Beach games shift the day for older children who have grown out of sandcastles. Bat and ball sets, throwing games and beach cricket kits all pack flat and give the whole family something to do together.

Inflatables are a different consideration entirely at open beaches, where wind and current matter — a pool inflatable and a beach inflatable are not the same thing.

Sun and shade

Beach shelters, pop-up tents and umbrellas make the difference between a two-hour beach trip and a whole day. Look for something one adult can put up alone, because the other adult will be in the water.
