Seat types for the early years

Bucket seats wrap around the child with a front bar or T-bar, suiting babies who can sit up unaided through to around three. Full-support seats add a high back and harness for younger or smaller riders.

The transition to a flat belt seat usually happens somewhere around three to four, when a child can grip the ropes and hold themselves upright without thinking about it.

Standalone frames

Small toddler frames are complete units, low to the ground and light enough to move. They suit the years before a child is ready for a full-size set, and many fold for storage between uses.

Because they are light, pinning them down makes a noticeable difference to how solid they feel — anchor stakes are included with most.

Adding a toddler seat to an existing frame

Most full-size swing sets accept a toddler seat on one station. Check the beam height first: toddler seats need to hang lower than an adult-sized swing, and some frames are simply too tall to give a comfortable seat position without very long ropes.

Adjustable rope hangers solve this and let you raise the seat as the child grows.

Indoor and doorway swings

Doorway swings fit a standard frame with a tension or bracket mount and are genuinely useful through a wet winter. Check the door frame construction before fitting — plasterboard reveals without solid timber behind them are not suitable mounting points.
