The most-used item in any dress-up box

A cape is the accessory that outlasts everything else. Long after a specific costume has been outgrown, the cape is still in circulation because it works with anything and requires no explanation — put one on and you are somebody.

For that reason a cape is often the better purchase than a complete costume for younger children, who will get years of play out of it rather than one afternoon.

Length

Length is the thing to get right. A cape that reaches the ground looks dramatic standing still and becomes a problem the moment its wearer runs, climbs or goes up steps. For active children, mid-calf or shorter is the practical choice.

Adults have more latitude, though full-length capes still need managing on stairs and in crowds.

Fastenings

Ties, hook-and-loop and clasps all appear across the range. Hook-and-loop is easiest for children to manage alone and releases if the cape is caught, which is why it is common on kids' designs. Clasps look better for adult costumes and formal masquerade.

Reversible designs

A reversible cape is effectively two costumes. Black on one side and a colour on the other covers a surprisingly wide range of characters, and it is the version to choose if the cape is destined for a dress-up box.

Fabric and care

Satin and polyester capes crease in packaging and hang out within a day or so. Most are gentle cold wash or hand wash — check the label, particularly where there is printed or appliqued detail.
