Why 12ft is the common choice

The mat comes in at roughly 3.3 metres — enough that a child can run three steps and jump, which is the point where a trampoline stops being a novelty and becomes the thing they use every afternoon. It also gives enough surface for two siblings to take turns without one waiting on the sidelines.

Twelve foot is where the bounce starts to feel properly generous. Larger mats flex more deeply, so the lift is higher and the landing softer than on a compact frame.

Space to allow

Around 5.2 metres square of clear, level ground. This is the size where overhead clearance becomes the deciding factor for many yards — a child on a 12ft mat gets high, and low branches or a verandah edge will rule out an otherwise perfect spot.

Mark the circle out with a hose before you order. It is a bigger footprint on the ground than it looks on a screen.

Getting the position right

Twelve foot frames are heavy once assembled and not something you will move casually, so spend a few minutes deciding. Level ground, away from fence lines and garden edging, ideally with afternoon shade if your yard offers it — a mat in full western sun gets hot enough to send everyone back indoors.

Choose on available ground, not on your children's current age. Families rarely regret going one size larger, and almost always regret going one size smaller.
