Why raised beats ground level for little kids

A table brings the play up to standing height, which changes how a toddler uses it. They can circle it, reach across it, and play alongside another child rather than taking turns. It also keeps knees and clothes considerably drier than a ground-level pit.

For children under three who are still unsteady kneeling and standing up again, the difference in how long they stay engaged is substantial.

Sand and water together

The reason these tables have two basins is that sand and water do more together than either does alone. Wet sand holds shape, so moulds work; dry sand pours and sifts. Having both within arm's reach turns simple scooping into building, damming and channel-digging.

It also means one side is always in use while the other dries out.

Draining and emptying

Look for a drain plug in the water basin. Without one you are tipping a full table over, which is heavier and messier than it sounds. A plug lets you empty it in place at the end of the day, which you will want to do rather than leaving standing water.

Lids and storage

The lid matters for the same reasons it matters on a sand pit. Many double as a flat play surface once closed, which is useful for smaller yards where the table has to earn its footprint.

Most tables come apart or fold for winter storage, and the legs are usually the only bulky part.
