Who these are for

Plastic sets are built for roughly one to five years old. Everything about them reflects that: low platforms, short slides, supportive swing seats, wide steps and no sharp transitions.

They will be outgrown, and that is the design intent rather than a shortcoming. What you get in exchange is equipment that suits a toddler exactly, at the stage when a full-size timber frame is simply too big to be useful.

The practical advantages

Moulded plastic does not rot, rust, splinter, or need oiling. It hoses clean. It survives being left out through winter and looks the same in spring.

The weight is the other advantage. Most sets can be dragged to a shady corner in the afternoon or moved undercover for a week of rain, which is not something you will do with a timber play centre.

Assembly

Generally an hour or two with a screwdriver, sometimes less. Parts push and click together with minimal hardware, and the instructions are usually pictorial.

Where they go afterwards

Because they are self-contained and hold up well, plastic sets have strong resale and hand-me-down value. Many families move one on to friends or relatives once their own children have moved to a larger frame, which makes the initial outlay easier to justify.

UV and colour

Bright plastic fades in Australian sun over several seasons. UV-stabilised mouldings hold their colour far better, and positioning a set where it catches afternoon shade slows fading noticeably.
