Always choose one with a cover

A cover is the single feature that decides whether a sand pit is still in use next summer. Left open, a pit collects leaves, fills with water after rain and takes days to dry out. Closed, it stays clean and ready to use the moment someone wants it.

Most models here include a hinged lid or a canopy. Some lids fold out to double as bench seating, which is a genuinely useful detail in a smaller yard where the pit has to earn its footprint.

Ground level or raised

Ground-level pits sit directly on the lawn and suit children from around eighteen months. They hold more sand, give room for two or three kids at once, and let a child climb straight in and sit down.

Raised pits and sand tables bring the play up to standing height. They suit toddlers who are still unsteady getting up and down, keep knees and clothes cleaner, and let children play side by side around the edge.

Timber or moulded

Timber pits look settled in a garden and are usually the larger option, with wide edges that double as seating. Like any outdoor timber they want a coat of oil before first use and a refresh each year.

Moulded plastic pits are lighter, hose clean in seconds and can be shifted to a shadier spot as the season changes. Many come as a two-piece shell where the upper half becomes the lid.

Filling and depth

Aim for roughly fifteen centimetres of sand — deep enough to dig properly and mound into shapes, shallow enough that it dries out quickly after rain. Filling much deeper than that mostly adds weight without adding play.

Where to put it

Partial shade is ideal. Full sun makes the surface uncomfortably warm by the middle of a summer day, while deep shade under an evergreen means it never properly dries. Morning sun with afternoon shade is close to perfect.

Set it back from the lawn edge if you would like to keep your grass, and expect a certain amount to travel indoors regardless of where you put it.

Keeping it in good order

Rake the surface over every week or so to break up clumps and bring damp sand up to dry. Keep the lid closed whenever nobody is playing, and give timber edges a fresh coat of oil at the start of each season.
