What the extra size gives you

The mat measures close to four metres, and the difference from a 12ft is more than the numbers suggest. A larger mat flexes more deeply through its centre, so the bounce is higher, softer and slower — closer to the feel of a gym trampoline than a backyard one.

That extra deflection also means a landing off-centre feels much less abrupt, which is what makes big frames comfortable for teenagers and adults as well as children.

Ground you will need

Allow roughly 5.8 metres square. At this size the practical constraint is usually the shape of the yard rather than its total area — a long narrow lawn may have the square metres without having a square patch to put them in.

Level ground matters more the larger the frame gets, because a slope puts progressively more load on the downhill legs of a wider circle.

Round or rectangular

Fourteen foot is the size where rectangular frames become worth considering. If someone in the house is doing gymnastics, tumbling or diving training, a rectangle delivers even lift across the whole mat rather than pulling toward the centre. For general family use, round remains the more practical shape.

Assembly

Two people, and give yourself the morning. The frame sections are long and the mat is heavy, and this is not a trampoline you will reposition afterwards on a whim, so settle the location first.
