How a sprung trampoline behaves

Steel springs stretch as you land and snap back as you leave the mat. The energy return is fast and lively, which is why sprung trampolines feel more athletic than springless ones and why gymnastics coaches still favour them.

Spring count and spring length both shape the feel. More springs distribute the load across more points and give a smoother bounce; longer springs stretch further and lift higher. Two trampolines of identical diameter can bounce quite differently depending on how they are sprung.

Choosing a shape

Round frames concentrate the bounce toward the centre of the mat, which naturally draws jumpers back to the middle. Rectangular frames deliver even lift right across the surface, so a landing near the end feels much the same as one in the middle.

Springs and pads over time

Springs are the one genuinely serviceable part of a trampoline. If a coil stretches past its useful life, you replace that coil rather than the frame, and a full spring set is inexpensive compared to a new trampoline.

The padded rim cover is the component to keep an eye on. It sits in full sun and takes the worst of the UV, and replacing it every few years keeps an older frame looking and feeling new. Both springs and pads are stocked in our accessories range.

Assembly

Sprung trampolines go together faster than springless ones. The spring-pull tool included with every model does the hard work; the trick is fitting springs in a star pattern, opposite sides in turn, rather than working around the ring, which keeps the mat centred and the tension even.
