Freestanding or attaching

Freestanding slides come as a complete unit with their own steps and need no other structure. They suit younger children and move easily, which makes them useful indoors on a wet week and outdoors the rest of the time.

Add-on slides bolt to a deck or platform and are sized to a specific deck height. Ordering one means knowing your platform height first — a slide designed for a 1.2 metre deck fitted to a 0.9 metre one ends up too shallow to slide properly.

Slide profiles

Straight slides give the fastest, most predictable ride and take up the least width.

Wave slides have one or more dips along their length. The ride is slower and bumpier, which younger children generally prefer, and they take a little more room.

Spiral and curved slides wrap around the tower, so they need far less ground length for the same drop. Useful in narrow yards where a straight slide would run into a fence.

Which way to face it

Point the exit away from the afternoon sun if you can. A moulded slide sitting in full western sun gets hot enough that it stops being used until evening, and orientation is far easier to get right at installation than to fix later.

Leave clear ground at the bottom. Children come off a slide moving, and they need somewhere to run out.

Keeping the surface good

Moulded plastic slides stay fast when clean. A wipe down with warm soapy water once a season removes the fine grit that otherwise makes the surface drag.
