Who a 10ft suits

Ten foot works well for one child who wants space to move, or two who are happy taking turns. The mat measures around 2.7 metres, enough for tuck jumps, twists and the beginnings of proper trampoline tricks without the frame feeling cramped.

It is also the size that tends to survive a family's changing needs. A four-year-old will not outgrow it, and a ten-year-old still finds it worth going outside for.

Fitting one in

Plan on about 4.5 metres square of clear ground. Level matters more than people expect — a frame on a slope always feels slightly wrong underfoot and puts uneven load on the legs. If your lawn falls away, it is worth digging in the downhill legs rather than living with it.

Round or rectangular at this size

Most 10ft trampolines are round, which is the shape that makes the best use of a square-ish patch of lawn. Round frames also return jumpers gently toward the centre, which is helpful when children are still learning where they are in the air.

Bounce feel

A 10ft mat gives a livelier bounce than an 8ft and a more controlled one than a 14ft. For most families it hits the balance well — enough lift to be exciting, not so much that a small child feels out of their depth.
