The eras look very different

Batman has been redesigned more than almost any character in this range. The classic comic version is grey and blue with a short cape and a soft cowl. The animated series version keeps the shape but darkens it. The modern film suits are black, armoured and heavily textured.

Children who know Batman from one source usually want that specific look, and the difference between grey-and-blue and matte black is not a detail they will overlook.

Cape length

The cape is what makes the costume and also what causes the most trouble. Full-length capes look excellent standing still and catch on everything the moment a child runs, climbs or goes up steps.

For an active event, mid-calf is the length that stays on. Adults have more latitude here.

Cowl or mask

Moulded cowls give the sharp silhouette but sit warm over a long evening. Soft fabric masks and eye masks are cooler and easier for younger children to keep on, trading away some of the outline.

Group and family costumes

Batman anchors one of the easiest group themes going. Batgirl, Catwoman, the Joker and the wider DC range all sit alongside it, and a family can cover heroes and villains without anyone having to explain the theme.

Sizing

Padded muscle-chest versions run smaller than the age label suggests. Check the garment measurements and choose the larger option if you are between sizes.
