Alice is a genuine literary classic, which makes this one of the safest possible options where a school requires a book connection. There is no ambiguity to explain and no policy to check.

Alice herself

The blue dress with a white pinafore and a black headband is the version everyone recognises. The pinafore and the headband are what identify her — a blue dress alone does not read as Alice.

The costume is also unusually comfortable by dress-up standards: simple lines, no padding, nothing over the head.

The supporting cast

Wonderland has one of the richest character sets in children's literature, and each is visually distinct. The Mad Hatter's oversized hat, the Queen's red and black, the White Rabbit's waistcoat and ears, the Cheshire Cat's stripes — all read instantly and none resembles another.

Group and family costumes

Because the characters look nothing like each other, a family or class group can cover five or six roles with no repetition and no confusion about who is who.

Accessories

The Mad Hatter's hat, the White Rabbit's pocket watch and ears, and Alice's headband are the pieces that carry each character. If you are assembling rather than buying, start with those.
