Hair does the heavy lifting

For a great many characters, the hair is the identifying feature. Get the wig right and the rest of the costume can be fairly simple; get it wrong and even an accurate outfit reads as generic.

Fitting a wig

Most costume wigs use an adjustable elastic band at the back with hooks or tabs. Set it snug enough that it does not shift when you turn your head, but not so tight that it aches after an hour.

Long hair goes underneath more neatly if it is plaited flat first, or contained in a wig cap. A cap also stops a synthetic wig irritating the scalp over a long evening.

Styling synthetic hair

Synthetic fibre will not tolerate heat styling — a straightener or dryer melts it. Style with fingers and a wide-tooth comb, working from the ends upward, and use a little water rather than product for stubborn sections.

Facial hair

Beards and moustaches usually attach with elastic or spirit gum. Elastic is quicker and easier for children; adhesive sits better and looks more convincing for adults, and needs the appropriate remover rather than being pulled off.

Keeping a wig usable

Store on a stand or loosely stuffed with tissue so the shape holds. Comb it out before packing away rather than after, and keep it out of hot storage — synthetic fibre goes frizzy and unmanageable in a roof space over a summer.
