Light side or dark side
The first decision, and it usually decides itself. Jedi costumes are layered robes in browns and creams; Sith costumes are black cloaks and hoods. Both are comfortable, loose-fitting and among the easier full costumes to wear for a long day.
Armour and masks
Trooper costumes and character helmets give the most complete transformation and are the warmest and most restrictive. Full helmets in particular limit vision and airflow considerably, which is worth planning around for an outdoor event.
Printed jumpsuit versions of armoured characters are far cooler and read well at a distance.
Robes are the practical choice
A Jedi or Sith robe goes over ordinary clothes, needs no fastening, comes off in seconds if the wearer gets warm, and fits a wide range of sizes. For a school event or a long party, it is the most comfortable option in the range.
Group and family costumes
Star Wars has one of the deepest character sets available, which means a family or group can cover heroes, villains, droids and creatures with no two costumes resembling each other.
Props
Lightsabers are the accessory every child wants. Check your event or school policy on props beforehand, since some have one.
Sizing
Armoured and padded costumes fit closer than the age label implies. Robes are forgiving. Check listed measurements for anything structured.
