Refreshing rather than replacing

Most backyard frames outlast the things hanging off them. Seats crack, ropes fray, plastic fittings go chalky in the sun — but the posts and beams are usually sound for many more years. Replacing the worn parts is quicker and far less disruptive than starting over.

Choosing swing seats

Belt seats are the standard flexible strap, suitable once a child can hold on and sit unaided. Bucket and toddler seats wrap around and include a front bar for the youngest riders. Full-support seats add a back and harness for children who need more.

Disc and nest seats take a different approach, offering a platform to sit, stand, lie or share. Nest seats in particular tend to become the most-used seat on any frame, because more than one child fits.

Getting the drop right

Seat height is set by rope or chain length, and it should suit the rider. Too high and a child cannot get on unaided; too low and they scuff the ground. Adjustable ropes are worth seeking out because you will change the height as they grow.

Compatibility

Attachment hardware varies between makers. Check the beam diameter and the fixing type your frame uses before ordering hangers and brackets. Rope and chain fittings are more universal than beam hardware.

Anchors

Ground anchors are the least exciting item here and among the most useful. They stop lighter frames rocking under load and hold everything steady when the weather turns.
