Accessories do most of the work

A costume is recognised by its details far more than its fabric. A wig, a hat and a pair of glasses can turn ordinary clothes into an unmistakable character, while an expensive outfit without its signature accessory often reads as nothing in particular.

This is why building a look from accessories is frequently more comfortable and more original than buying a complete costume — and why the accessory is worth getting right when you do buy one.

Where to start

Work out the one detail that makes the character identifiable and buy that first. For some it is the hair, for others a mask, a hat or a prop. Everything else can usually be assembled from a wardrobe.

Comfort over the course of an event

Accessories are what people take off first when they get uncomfortable. Wigs get hot, masks restrict vision, and elaborate headpieces get heavy. If the event runs for hours, choose the lighter option and it will still be on at the end.

Reuse

Accessories outlive costumes. A good wig, a decent hat and a solid mask get pulled out year after year for entirely different looks, which makes them the better place to spend if you dress up regularly.

Storage

Keep wigs on a stand or stuffed with tissue so they hold their shape, store masks flat rather than stacked, and keep everything out of a hot roof space where latex and foam perish.
